In this video, we knew that Nilam and Randy told about their memorable experience during a vacation. They use some expressions by using Simple Past Tense. For instance, Nilam said, “ I went to my grandparent’s house with my family.” It means that Nilam had an experience that happened in the past time (=vacation) by visiting her grandparent’s house. Whether, Randy did not have a nice vacation because of being sick, therefore, he said, “It was terrible. I got sick during a vacation”.
Therefore,
in simple way, Simple Past Tense indicates an activity that was conducted at
the past time, or other words, it is
used to tell about a completed action in a time before now. Moreover, it is
usually followed by adverb of time namely yesterday,
last week, two days ago, in this morning etc. There are two kinds of verbs
used namely Regular Verb that is followed by –ed such as walk-walked, study-studied, etc, and Irregular Verb such as eat-ate, bring-brought, etc. Here is the pattern usually used in Simple Past Tense, as follows:
1st EXAMPLE:
(+) My mother cooked a chocolate cake last week.
(-) My mother did not cook a chocolate cake last week.
(?) Did my mother cook a chocolate cake last week?
2nd EXAMPLE:
(+) I went
to a market yesterday.
(-) I did
not go to a market yesterday.
(?) Did
I go to a market yesterday?
3rd EXAMPLE:
(+) Mr. Yudi was in Germany six months ago.
(-) Mr. Yudi was not in Germany six months
ago.
(?) Was
Mr. Yudi in Gemany six months ago.?
