EXPRESSIONS OF ASKING AND GIVING OPINION

In the beginning of new semester, your teacher wants to know your opinion about your new class, so she asks you about it. Then, what will you say to her? What do you say to express your point of view about your class? Here it is!  Let’s learn about some expressions of asking and giving opinion! Good luck!

    In this video, Mrs. Anna asks for Fandi’s opinion about the class. She uses the expression of asking opinion by saying, “What do you think about your new class?”. Then, Fandi answers her question as well as his opinion about what Mrs. Anna ask for; Opinion about his class. Fandi said, “I think it is clean and tidy. And I like it.”

(Dalam video tersebut, Mrs. Anna menanyakan pendapat Fandi tentang kelasnya. Dia menggunakan ungkapan meminta pendapat dengan mengatakan, “Bagaimana pendapatmu tentang kelas barumu?”. Lalu, Fandi menjawab pertanyaan Mrs. Anna sebagai pendapatnya tentang apa yang Mrs. Anna tanyakan; Pendapat tentang kelas tersebut. Fandi mengatakan, “Saya fikir kelas ini bersih dan rapi. Dan saya menyukainya.”

Therefore, Expression of asking for opinion is usually used to ask for an opinion or point of view about something to others, whereas, Expression of giving opinion is functioned to deliver your thinking about what she/he asked for; as an responded answer of expression of asking for opinion.

(Ungkapan meminta pendapat biasanya digunakan untuk menanyakan sebuah pendapat atau pandangan tentang sesuatu kepada orang lain, sedangkan, ungkapan memberi pendapat digunakan untuk menyampaikan pemikiran atau pendapatmu tentang sesuatu tersebut yang ditanyakan, atau dengan kata lain ungkapan ini merupakan jawaban/respon terhadap ungkapan meminta pendapat.)

     In addition, in order to give a response toward others’ opinion, there are two sides that are Agreeing and Disagreeing with an opinion. Here is the examples that can be used in conversation.)

(Selanjutnya, untuk memberikan tanggapan terhadap pendapat orang lain, terdapat dua respon yakni Setuju dan Tidak setuju dengan sebuah pendapat/opini. Berikut ini contoh ungkapan yang dapat digunakan dalam percakapan.) 

Agreeing with an Opinion	Disagreeing with an Opinion
Of course.	I’m sorry, I don’t agree with you.
That’s good idea.	I don’t think so.
This is absolutely right.	I don’t believe that.
I agree with this opinion.	I disagree with you.

 

Dialogue 1

Anne	:	Mom, what do you think if we go to Pahawang Beach for this weekend?
Mother	:	I don’t think so, Dear. I think it’s better for us to just stay at home because of COVID-19. We can spend our time by trying new recipe taken from internet, can’t we?
Anne	:	Ehm… That’s good idea, Mom.
Mother	:	Ok. Let’s prepare for it then.

 

Dialogue 2

Nilam	:	Hi, Mario. What are you doing?
Mario	:	Hi, Nilam. Ehm…Just enjoy the view this morning. What is your opinion about today’s weather?
Nilam	:	Cool! In my opinion, it is very fresh and awesome. What a shining day.
Mario	:	You are absolutely right.

Complete the dialogue bellow with the expressions of asking and giving opinion and practice it confidently with your friends!

Adnan	:	Hello, Putri. What’s going on?
Putri	:	Owh, I’m just trying to access Rumah Belajar to find out the references for our group assignment.
Adnan	:	Great work! Then, ….. about Rumah Belajar?
Putri	:	……
Adnan	:	…… I also access it when I do my task given by our teacher.
Putri	:	Surely? Oh I see, that’s why you always got best score in the class.
