A. EXPRESSIONS OF CONGRATULATIONS

In the end of the academic year, surprisingly, your brother got the first rank in the class. You feel so happy for his achievement. You want to congratulate him. Then, what will you say to him? What do you say to express your hope for him so that he will get the first rank again in the next semester? Here it is!  Let’s learn about some expressions of congratulating others, giving hopes and wishes for them! Good luck!

(Di akhir tahun pelajaran, sangat mengejutkan bahwa saudara laki-lakimu mendapat peringkat pertama di kelas. Kamu merasa sangat bahagia atas keberhasilannya. Kamu akan memberi ucapan selamat kepadanya. Lalu, apa yang akan kamu katakan kepadanya? Apa yang akan kamu sampaikan untuk mengungkapkan harapan/doa kepadanya sehingga dia akan mendapat peringkat pertama lagi di semester berikutnya. Nah ini dia! xpression of congratulations is usually used to give the congratulation utterance when she/he succeeded in doing something or celebrate the certain occasions. In other words, it indicates an appreciation of others’ achievement or special events.

(Ungkapan selamat biasanya digunakan untuk memberikan ucapan selamat ketika seseorang berhasil dalam melakukan sesuatu atau merayakan peristiwa penting. Dengan kata lain, ungkapan ini menunjukkan sebuah penghargaan atas keberhasilan/kesuksesan atau peristiwa yang special/penting.)

There are some kinds of expressions, as follows:

1. Congratulations of someone’s success including be a winner in the competition/contest, jobs promotion, graduation, etc.

2.    Birthday

3.    Wedding

4.    Eid/Idul Fitri

5.    Anniversary

B. EXPRESSION OF HOPES/WISHES

E

xpression of Hopes/Wishes is used when someone want to make a wish for him/her to be better, and when at the time someone is hoping for certain matters or things. Moreover, there is a little difference between “hope” and “wish”, let’s check it out!

(Ungkapan Harapan/Doa digunakan ketika seseorang ingin memberikan harapan doa kepada seseorang untuk menjadi lebih baik lagi dan pada suatu ketika seseorang berharap untuk hal atau benda tertentu. Lebih lanjut lagi, ada sedikit perbedaan antara “Hope” dan “Wish”. Yuk simak berikut ini!) 

• Wish is usually used in the past tense, though it can be also used in the presents tense. It often talks about regrets or wants. On other words, Wish also most commonly use in hypothetical (imagined/unreal) situations.
• 
  
• (“Wish” biasanya digunakan untuk sesuatu yang terjadi pada waktu lampau, meskipun ini juga bisa digunakan untuk waktu sekarang. “Wish” sering menunjukkan penyesalan atau keinginan. Dengan kata lain, “Wish” sangat umum digunakan pada situasi yang tidak nyata/imajinasi (hipotetis))

• Hope works more for future tense, though it can be used for present tense. It often focuses aspirations. For future hopes, particularly, the possibilities of it are still opened to be achieved or happened.

(“Hope” lebih menunjukkan sesuatu yang terjadi di masa depan, meskipun juga bisa digunakan untuk waktu sekarang. “Hope” sering menunjukkan aspirasi. Terutama untuk harapan di masa depan, kemungkinan masih mungkin terjadi/tercapai.)

PATTERNS Subject + Hope/wish + Sentence   E.g.    I hope you will perform well on the stage.           I wish you win the competition.

At least, there are two ways how to express hopes and wishes, as follows:

Subject + Hope to + V1 + Object/compliment E.g.    I hope to get a good mark in the test.           We hope to become a winner in this English competition.

Nadia           : Yesterday, I heard from Mrs. Ani that you get a scholarship to study abroad. Is that right?

Meilan          : Thanks God. That’s right.

Nadia           : I’d like to congratulate you. You deserve it. Your mom and dad must be proud of you. I hope you will achieve your dream there.

Meilan          :Thank you. I hope so. Actually, it was a special gift in my birthday.

Nadia           : Wow, really? What an awesome. Happy Birthday then. Wish you all the best.

Meilan          : Many thanks, Nadia.
