EDUCATION IN DIGITAL ERA

I

n this digital era, the demand of an extraordinary  innovation of is a must in all areas as well as in education settings. This innovation deals with the utilizing of information and communication technology (ICT) towards the process of education. Moreover, it is also in line with Kang, Kim, & You cited in Trisdiono (2013) that the standard quality of education has been changed as rapid as the growth of ICT and global economy. ICT enhances people to communicate easily and freely around the world and it affects the tighter competition among them. Therefore, education as a basic pillar of success must cover this matter well.

In addition, Rotherdam & Willingham cited in Trisdiono (2013) also stated that the success of pupils depends on the proficiency of Partnership for 21th Century Skills i.e. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Communication Skills and Collaboration. Here are the details, as follows:

A.     Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

It deals with how the pupils identify and explore the problems happened in real world by generating their logical-reasoned thinking, comprehend the interconnection among the concepts of study and its contextual implementation, and evaluate and find out the judged-innovative solutions.

B.      Communication Skills

This term refers to literacy and communication skills to deliver the creative ideas contextually. Moreover, literacy related to Data Literacy (the skills of reading, analyzing, and utilizing information in digital era), ICT Literacy (Understanding how digital application works in proper way), and Human Literacy (humanity, soft skills, and team work). Furthermore, a communication skill is needed to elaborate and deliver pupils’ ideas to others by using acceptable and contextual language in oral as well as written form.

C.      Collaboration

People are defined as a social creature in which they live social-emotionally to fulfill the needs in life. In this case, pupils are strived for adapt, compromise, and collaborate with others as well as build team work to achieve their proficiency.

Furthermore, in order to accomplish the demands of digital era in education settings, there are some basic principles of learning as stated from Rohim, Bima and Julian (2016), as follows:

In conclusion, the success of education is influenced by the aspects of proficiency as well as the basic principles of learning in digital era.
